  • Coordinating thread
  • Filling – you can use feed corn, rice, dry beans of any other available option
  • A sewing machine or quality needle

Making a heating pillow is not in any way different from common pillows and if you already have the required knowledge, then going to the next step is always easy.

How to sew the pillows

To begin the process, you need to cut your fabric into two equal rectangles, squares or any other shape of your choosing. Make sure you have sharp scissors to help you do this without any stress. Once you have cut your two pieces, place them on top of each other and make sure they are perfectly aligned to each other. As you do this, always make sure that the side you want visible is facing inside since you’ll turn the sewn product inside out and you don’t want to make any mistakes.

This done, sew around the pieces and only leave a small opening through which you’ll be able to put your rice or corn through. Once you are through with the sewing, clip the corners perfectly well so that no flaws are easily visible and help your seams to lie flat.

Once you are through with the clipping, you can turn your pillow case inside out and use a pen, scissor tips, stick or your own finger to push the corners so they don’t appear dented. When this is done, you can fill the case with the filling you have chosen but it’s advisable to fill it to around three quarters.

You can hand stitch the opening to close it up or choose to put a zip which might be more appropriate to prevent against spillage. One this is done, you will be ready to beat the winter cold with your nice looking DIY heating pillow. With your filling already in the case, just place the pillow in a microwave for a few minutes and then stash it between your bed sheets to drive away the cold.

Sewing homemade heating pillows is not a tough call especially if you have the right tools including a sewing machine and fabric. Why not do it yourself and enjoy the fun?
